About URL Encoder & Decoder
Encode and decode URLs.
The tool is designed to process data in the browser unless the interface explicitly states that a network request is required.
How to use this tool
- Enter or select the url, uri, query string value you want to work with.
- Review the available settings, then run the encode action.
- Review the url, uri output and use the copy or download action when the tool provides one.
What you can do with URL Encoder & Decoder
- Encode url parameters
- Decode percent encoded url
What this conversion does
Percent-encode text for safe use in a URL query string, or decode an encoded URL back to readable text.
Example input
hello world&x=1
Example output
hello%20world%26x%3D1
Practical workflow
- Choose Encode or Decode.
- Paste the text or the encoded URL fragment.
- Click the convert button, then Copy the result or Swap to reverse the conversion.
Common use cases
- Encode a search term or a value containing spaces, ampersands, or slashes before putting it in a query parameter.
- Decode a tracking link or redirect URL to see the real destination and parameters.
- Read a percent-encoded value copied from server logs or an OAuth callback.
Important notes and limitations
- Encoding uses encodeURIComponent, which escapes every reserved character including : / ? & and = — paste a single parameter value, not a full URL you want to keep intact.
- Decoding a string with a malformed percent sequence (for example a lone %) shows the browser's URIError message.
- Conversion happens in your browser and the last input and mode are remembered locally.
Continue your workflow
- Base64 Encoder & Decoder — encode binary-safe data for headers or tokens.
- HTML Entities Encoder — escape the same text for use inside HTML instead of a URL.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between %20 and + for a space?
Both are accepted in query strings, but this tool always emits %20, which is valid in every part of a URL. Only form-encoded bodies traditionally use + for spaces.
Should I encode a whole URL or just the parameter value?
Just the value. Encoding the whole URL turns https:// into https%3A%2F%2F and breaks it. Build the URL, then encode each dynamic value separately.
Why does decoding fail with a URIError?
The input contains a % that is not followed by two hexadecimal digits, or a byte sequence that is not valid UTF-8. Fix or remove that sequence and try again.
