  2. Review the available settings, then run the encode action.
  3. Review the url, uri output and use the copy or download action when the tool provides one.

What you can do with URL Encoder & Decoder

  • Encode url parameters
  • Decode percent encoded url

What this conversion does

Encode special characters into percent-encoding or decode percent-encoded URLs back to readable text.

Example input

https://example.com/search?q=hello world & test

Example output

https%3A%2F%2Fexample.com%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Dhello%20world%20%26%20test

Practical workflow

  1. Paste your URL, query string, or plain text into the input field.
  2. Choose 'Encode' (encodeURI / encodeURIComponent) or 'Decode' mode.
  3. Copy the resulting escaped or unescaped string.

Common use cases

  • Encode query parameters containing spaces, ampersands (&), and non-ASCII characters.
  • Decode obscure percent-encoded tracking links and redirect URLs (e.g. %20, %2F, %3F).
  • Sanitize web hook payloads and REST API endpoints.

Important notes and limitations

  • Standard RFC 3986 percent-encoding replaces unsafe ASCII characters with '%' followed by two hexadecimal digits.
  • Spaces can be represented as '%20' or '+' depending on form-urlencoded specifications.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between encodeURI and encodeURIComponent?

encodeURI preserves protocol and domain characters (like :, /, ?), while encodeURIComponent encodes everything, making it suitable for single query parameter values.

How are international UTF-8 characters encoded in URLs?

Unicode characters outside the ASCII range are converted into UTF-8 bytes and represented as multiple percent-encoded triplets (e.g. 'é' becomes '%C3%A9').
