About Word Counter

Count words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs.

The tool is designed to process data in the browser unless the interface explicitly states that a network request is required.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter or select the text value you want to work with.
  2. Review the available settings, then run the count action.
  3. Review the word count, character count, sentence count output and use the copy or download action when the tool provides one.

What you can do with Word Counter

  • Count words in text

What this conversion does

Count words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, and paragraphs in real time, and estimate reading and speaking time.

Example input

Hello world. This is a short test!

Example output

7 words · 34 characters · 28 without spaces · 2 sentences · 1 paragraph · ~1 min reading

Practical workflow

  1. Type or paste your text into the editor; the counters update on every keystroke.
  2. Read the eight cards: words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, reading time, speaking time, and average characters per word.
  3. Use Copy to grab the text or Clear to start over.

Common use cases

  • Stay within a word or character limit for an essay, abstract, application form, or ad copy.
  • Estimate how long a blog post takes to read or a speech takes to deliver.
  • Check tweet, meta description, or title lengths before publishing.

Important notes and limitations

  • Counting runs in your browser and nothing is stored — the text is gone when you close the tab.
  • Reading time assumes 200 words per minute and speaking time 130 words per minute, both rounded up to the next minute.
  • Sentences are split on . ! and ? characters, so abbreviations such as “e.g.” and ellipses can inflate the sentence count.
  • Character counts use JavaScript UTF-16 code units, so an emoji can count as more than one character. Punctuation-only and whitespace-only fragments do not count as sentences.

Frequently asked questions

How are words counted?

The text is trimmed and split on any run of whitespace, so hyphenated words count as one and numbers count as words.

What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?

Characters with spaces is the total length of the text, which is what most platform limits use. Characters without spaces removes every space, tab, and line break.

How is reading time calculated?

Words divided by 200 words per minute, rounded up. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a typical presentation pace.

Does it count paragraphs correctly if I use single line breaks?

A paragraph ends at a blank line. Lines separated by a single line break are counted as one paragraph.
