File Encryption & Decryption

Encrypt and decrypt any file locally with a passphrase using AES-256-GCM. Free browser-based tool with no signup required.

About File Encryption & Decryption

Encrypt and decrypt any file locally with a passphrase using AES-256-GCM.

The tool is designed to process data in the browser unless the interface explicitly states that a network request is required.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter or select the file, document, photo value you want to work with.
  2. Review the available settings, then run the encrypt action.
  3. Review the encrypted file, decrypted file output and use the copy or download action when the tool provides one.

What you can do with File Encryption & Decryption

  • Encrypt a file with a password
  • Decrypt an encrypted file

What this conversion does

Encrypt any file with a passphrase using AES-256-GCM, or decrypt a file this tool previously encrypted.

Example input

Select contract.pdf, enter a passphrase, choose Encrypt

Example output

Download contract.pdf.enc — decrypt it later with the same passphrase to get contract.pdf back

Practical workflow

  1. Choose Encrypt or Decrypt mode.
  2. Select or drop any file — documents, photos, archives, anything.
  3. Enter a strong passphrase (the same one is required to decrypt later).
  4. Download the resulting file: an encrypted `.enc` file, or the restored original.

Common use cases

  • Encrypt a sensitive document before uploading it to shared or untrusted storage.
  • Protect a backup file with a passphrase before emailing it.
  • Decrypt a file previously encrypted with this tool on another device.

Important notes and limitations

  • Encryption and decryption run entirely in your browser using the Web Crypto API (AES-256-GCM with a PBKDF2-derived key); files are never uploaded.
  • There is no password recovery. If you lose the passphrase, the encrypted file cannot be decrypted by this tool or anyone else.
  • The encrypted file embeds the original filename and a random salt and IV, so the same file encrypted twice produces different output every time.

Frequently asked questions

How do I encrypt a file online?

Select the file, choose Encrypt, enter a passphrase, and download the resulting .enc file. The whole process runs locally in your browser with AES-256-GCM — nothing is uploaded.

What happens if I enter the wrong passphrase when decrypting?

Decryption fails with a clear error instead of producing garbled output. AES-GCM authenticates the ciphertext, so a wrong passphrase or a tampered file is always detected.

Can I recover a file if I forget the passphrase?

No. There is no backdoor or recovery mechanism — that is what makes the encryption real. Keep the passphrase somewhere safe, such as a password manager.

Is this different from the Text Encryption tool?

Yes. Text Encryption & Decryption handles short text/messages with several algorithm choices; File Encryption & Decryption handles whole files of any type using AES-256-GCM specifically.
