About Code Formatter
Format and minify JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
The tool is designed to process data in the browser unless the interface explicitly states that a network request is required.
How to use this tool
- Enter or select the javascript, html, css value you want to work with.
- Review the available settings, then run the format action.
- Review the formatted code, minified code output and use the copy or download action when the tool provides one.
What you can do with Code Formatter
- Format javascript code
- Beautify css
What this conversion does
Beautify JavaScript, HTML, CSS, or JSON with Prettier in the browser, or minify it for a quick size reduction.
Example input
const foo = "bar";function test(){console.log(foo)}
Example output
const foo = 'bar';
function test() {
console.log(foo);
}
Practical workflow
- Select the language: JavaScript, HTML, CSS, or JSON.
- Paste the code and click Beautify to format it, or Minify to compress it.
- The result replaces the editor content — Copy it when you are done.
Common use cases
- Make a minified or badly indented snippet readable before reviewing it.
- Pretty-print a JSON payload from an API response or log line.
- Normalise quotes and indentation in a code sample before pasting it into documentation.
Important notes and limitations
- Beautify uses Prettier (standalone build) with fixed settings: 2-space indentation, semicolons, and single quotes for JavaScript. There are no per-run style options.
- Minify is exact for JSON (parse and re-serialize). For JavaScript, HTML, and CSS it strips comments and collapses whitespace — a quick reduction, not a production minifier, and it can break code that depends on newlines.
- Formatting runs entirely in your browser; the code and language are remembered in local storage.
Continue your workflow
- JSON Beautifier — validate and explore JSON with a dedicated viewer.
- SQL Formatter — format SQL queries, which this tool does not cover.
Frequently asked questions
Why were my double quotes changed to single quotes?
The JavaScript formatter runs Prettier with singleQuote enabled. Strings that contain a single quote keep double quotes, as Prettier does.
Can I change the indentation width?
Not in this tool — it is fixed at two spaces to match the most common Prettier configuration.
Is the minified JavaScript safe to deploy?
Treat it as a quick size check only. It removes comments and whitespace without parsing the code, so use a real bundler or minifier such as esbuild or Terser for production.
Does it format TypeScript or SQL?
No. Supported languages are JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and JSON. Use the SQL Formatter for queries and the JSON to TypeScript tool for type generation.
